What would your answer be if someone asked you what’s one thing you’re looking forward to and one thing you’re leaving behind? To be super specific, what would your response be if the question pertained to 2020 and 2021?

Yes, 2020 was a royal mess. With that being said, do you have any particular examples of things you’d like to let go of and leave behind from the year that’s ending? This can really be anything — from stress, toxic relationships, poor eating habits, or just purging your closet with items you no longer use.

So, now that 2020 is in the rear-view mirror, what do you foresee in the coming year? To help you figure out and find what you’re looking forward to in 2021, check out the following mantras. As you’ll notice, each catch-phrase is a short and sweet way of capturing how you can still make things that you want to do come true!

Take Time to Take Control

Since the chaos in 2020 caught everyone by surprise, 2021 is an opportunity to take back your life. Granted, there’s still a lot of unknown in the world. However, you still have the power to control 1) how you choose to react to bad news, 2) how you choose to react to challenging behavior and 3) how to do things that work for you.

Plan What You Can

If your dream in 2021 is to make a major life change, (but you don’t know when and how it will come to fruition), you can still take steps to make it happen. So, say you want to move to another country, but everything is on hold because of circumstances beyond your control. While this sucks, get cracking on learning the language of where you plan to move and research all you can. This way, when the time is right, you’ll have all your ducks in a row and be ready to go!

Prioritize What Matters

Starting a new year is an opportunity to focus on what’s important to you. Think of it as a way to create a clean slate and recalibrate. Maybe you now feel like less is more. If this is the case, focus on the quality of your relationships, rather than how many relationships you have. You can also give more attention to having experiences, instead of buying material things.

Placing emphasis on what’s most important to you is all about doing what you want to do; not what you feel you have to do.

Leaving behind and looking forward is a great way to see how far you’ve come and to take notice of what else you’d still like to accomplish. And, with 2021 just around the corner, what better time than now to name what you don’t want to bring with you as you step into the new year.
